The Sunfish World Championship is Back
New Baltimore, June 4th, 2021: After being postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sunfish Worlds will be held this October in Sarasota Florida. Last year was the first time in over 50 years that the event wasn’t held.
The Sunfish World Championship is a one design sailing competition using the Sunfish Sailboat. The Sunfish is the most popular sailboat ever designed with over 300,000 sold over the last 60 years. The popularity of Sunfish sailing makes this an eagerly anticipated event in any year, but after a year spent indoors and off the water, racers and spectators are especially excited for the 2021 event.
In one design sailing, all boats are identical, meaning that the outcome is determined entirely by sailing skill. This year 100 boats are expected to line up in sunny Florida for the shotgun start. It promises to be both an exciting race and a celebration of a world, hopefully, inching it’s way back to normalcy.
All participants are provided with brand new boats for the race. This year boats will be provided by SunfishDirect, a family owned business based in New Baltimore, MI. SunfishDirect has been selling and supporting Sunfish boats and parts for the past 15 years. Owner Chris McLellan says “We couldn’t be more excited to help make this year’s World’s a reality”.
The event will be held from October 23rd through October 30th and will be hosted by Sarasota Sailing Squadron in Sarasota, FL in collaboration with the Sunfish Class Association and SunfishDirect.com. More information about the competition can be found at sunfishworlds.org.
